Currently, SLE cannot be cured. The objective of treatment is to reduce the symptoms, decelerate the course of the disease and to improve the patient's quality of life. In this, the therapy is adapted to the current disease activity and depends on which organs are particularly affected by inflammation. Pain killers may be used supplementary. Measures such as controlling high blood pressure or the avoidance of sunlight may also be supportively effective. However, a great medical need for effective and tolerable SLE drugs continues to exist.
