In recent years it has become possible to fight RA with particularly effective biological drugs. So-called "biologics" directly influence misdirected immune processes and thus directly interfere with the disease's origination. Most biologics are directly targeted against certain messenger molecules of the immune system which abound during the inflammatory reaction and thus further promotes the actual inflammation. Inflammation symptoms can be reduced and joint destruction delayed by inhibiting this messenger agent.Although biologics are applied alone or in combination with other therapeutics, at currently very good success rates, a high medical need for effective and tolerable RA drugs continues to exist.
